Keep St Luke’s Hospital in Rathgar

For over half a century St Luke’s Hospital, Dublin has been the main radiotherapy treatment centre for people suffering from cancer. The aim of St Luke’s is to treat and cure as many forms of cancer as possible. It provides advanced treatment machines and planning facilities. St Luke’s provides high in-patient and out-patient care.

In July 2005 the government announced a decision to move St Luke’s to the site of St Jame’s Hospital as part of the National Radiotherapy Network. We believe this move is not in the best interest of the patients treated at this wonderful hospital in Rathgar. St Luke’s should be expanded, upgraded and retained in St Luke’s in Rathgar.

Having had treatment in St Lukes some years back I would be horrified to think that there was a possibility that it could be shut down. While there and even now I received the kindest and top class care. This all helps so much when you are so vulenerable and anxious. I would have nothing but good to say about St Lukes I hope it can continue in its excellent work.

My father also passed away in this hospital and the only consolation at the time was the extraordinary care received from the staff . The decision to move the hospital is another harsh reminder (as if we needed one) of the vicious two tier health system in this country which is in favour of privatisation and profiteering from basic human needs.
